Cricket's Three Formats and How Betting Differs

The style of play differs across the three formats, so the approach to betting differs too. Knowing which markets are most common in each format makes betting much easier.

Fastest Format

T20

Each team plays just 20 overs, so matches finish quickly. Tournaments like BPL and IPL are played in T20 format. It is the most popular format among fans in Bangladesh. Match Winner, Toss, and total runs markets are the most active in this format.

50-Over Contest

ODI

Each team gets 50 overs, so the pace is slower than T20 but faster than Test. ODIs are played in the ICC World Cup and bilateral series. Top Batsman, leading wicket-taker, and partnership runs markets are most common in this format.

Five-Day Classic

Test

The oldest and most prestigious format in cricket, lasting up to five days. Weather, pitch conditions, and innings strategy play a big role here. Because a draw is possible, there are more available markets — such as innings runs or total match wickets.

BPL, IPL and International Matches

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is our home tournament — the country's best cricketers take part and the excitement among fans is something special. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is also hugely popular with Bangladeshi fans, as the world's best players compete together.

Beyond that, matches featuring Bangladesh Tigers in the ICC T20 World Cup, Asia Cup, and bilateral series always attract extra interest. takabe offers betting on the big matches across all these tournaments.

Popular Cricket Betting Markets

There are many types of bets available in cricket. The most widely used markets are briefly outlined below.

Match Winner

Which team wins the match — Team A or Team B? The simplest market. T20 and ODI matches have no draws, so there are only two options.

Toss Betting

Bet on which team will win the toss before the match starts. The result is completely separate from the match itself and is settled before play begins.

Top Batsman

Which batsman will score the most runs for their team? The outcome of this market depends on individual innings performance.

Total Runs Over/Under

Bet on whether the total runs scored will be more or less than a set number (for example, 160). This is very popular in T20.

Multi Bet

Combine multiple matches or markets into a single bet. For example: a multi bet on three separate Match Winners requires all three to be correct.

Betting Exchange

You can bet not only in favour of a team winning, but also against them — betting on a loss against another player. Both BACK and LAY options are available.

Method of First Wicket

How will the first wicket fall — bowled, caught, run out, or another way? Experienced bettors tend to enjoy this market for entertainment.

How to Read Odds

Odds on a betting site are shown in three formats — decimal, fractional, and American. All three give the same information; only the way they are presented differs.

Example 1 — The same odds in three formats (Team A to win, stake ৳1,000)
Decimal
2.50
Fractional
3/2
American
+150

If Team A wins at these odds, you get back ৳2,500 (৳1,500 profit + original stake of ৳1,000). If Team A loses, you lose ৳1,000.

Example 2 — Favourite's odds (Team B to win)
Decimal
1.25
Fractional
1/4
American
-400

American minus odds show how much you need to stake to win ৳100. Here, a ৳1,000 stake returns ৳1,250 (৳250 profit). Decimal 1.25 is a low number, meaning this is the favourite.

In decimal odds, the higher the number, the further from favourite. A number close to 1.00 means a near-certain outcome, while above 5.00 means less likely but a higher return. Betting is for entertainment — every bet carries the risk of losing.

Live In-Play Betting — Bet While the Match Is On

One of cricket's biggest features is how quickly the situation can change mid-game. When a key wicket falls, a team's chances of winning drop — and the odds change right away.

In live betting you can place bets even after the match has started. After every over, updated run rates and wicket counts open new markets. For example: if Team A has a very strong score at 10 overs, Team B's odds to win will lengthen — creating an opportunity to back Team B at that moment.

There is less time to decide in in-play betting, so it is better to understand the markets well before you start. Alongside cricket, takabe also offers in-play betting on football and other sports.

Multi Bet and Cricket Exchange Betting

Multi Bet Example

A multi bet combining the winners of three separate matches: decimal odds of 1.40, 1.50, and 1.70. Multiplied together: 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.70 = 3.57 (approximately). A ৳100 stake returns ৳357 if all three selections win. But if any one of them loses, the entire stake is gone.

Multi bets offer higher returns, but the risk is also higher — getting all selections right is difficult.

Betting Exchange Example

BACK Team A at decimal odds of 2.00: a ৳500 stake wins ৳500 profit if Team A wins (before commission); if Team A does not win, you lose ৳500.

LAY Team A (assuming a backer's stake of ৳500): the layer's liability is ৳500 (৳500 × 1.00). If Team A does not win, the layer's profit is ৳500 (before commission); if Team A wins, the layer's loss is ৳500.

In exchange betting you are betting against another player, not against the site as with a regular bookmaker.

Other Sports Beyond Cricket

Football offers similar markets to cricket betting — Match Winner, goals Over/Under, first goalscorer — but the difference is that a draw is possible in football, so the Match Winner market has three options: 1, X (draw), 2.

Because cricket matches last longer, live betting creates far more opportunities. In Test cricket the odds keep shifting over five days, which you do not see in any other sport. A football match is only 90 minutes, so the live betting window is short.

Betting is also available on tennis, basketball, and volleyball. Game-based markets are more common in these sports, where in addition to the overall match you can bet on the outcome of individual sets or games.

Cricket vs Other Sports

  • More in-play opportunities in cricket
  • Five-day betting window in Test matches
  • Quick results in T20
  • The draw option in football requires a different approach
  • Multi bets available across all sports

Cricket Betting Common Questions

T20 finishes in 20 overs, so the situation in Match Winner and total runs markets changes quickly. ODI has 50 overs, meaning odds shift more gradually and longer-term markets like Top Batsman or leading wicket-taker are more common.

Decimal odds of 1.50 mean you get back ৳150 for every ৳100 staked. That includes ৳50 profit and your original ৳100 stake. If your bet loses, you lose the full ৳100.

Odds change almost instantly when a wicket falls or a big shot is hit. They also update after every over based on the run rate. In T20 the changes are fastest because the match is shorter. In live betting it is important to check the odds carefully before placing a bet.

Both are T20 format tournaments, so the types of markets are much the same — Match Winner, Toss, Top Batsman, total runs Over/Under. However, IPL has more teams and runs longer, giving a larger betting window. BPL draws extra interest from fans because of the home atmosphere and familiar teams.

In a multi bet you only get a return if every selection wins. If even one selection loses, you lose the entire stake. For example: in a three-selection multi bet, even if two selections win and one loses, a ৳100 stake returns nothing.
